Introduction

Located in Guizhou Province fairly close to the border with Hunan, this is the principal mountain of the Wuling Ridge which straddles the two provinces. Reaching up to 2572m the peak is higher than any in the provinces covered by this book. This is a superb birding site and it deserves to be much more frequently visited than it currently is.

 

Key Species

Mandarin Duck, Temminck’s Tragopan, Large Woodshrike, Large-billed Leaf Warbler, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Black-headed Sibia, White-collared Yuhina, Golden Parrotbill. Elliot’s Pheasant, Reeves’s Pheasant and Golden Pheasant also occur here.

Black Baza, Crested Honey Buzzard, Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Goshawk, Chinese Goshawk, Chinese Bamboo Partridge, Mountain Scops Owl, Grey-capped Woodpecker, Crested Kingfisher, Great Barbet, Black Bulbul (White-headed), Chestnut Bulbul, Mountain Bulbul, Brown-breasted Bulbul, Black-breasted Thrush, Pygmy Wren Babbler, Chinese Babax, White-browed Laughingthrush, Dusky Fulvetta, Black-chinned Yuhina, Golden Spectacled Warbler, Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Fujian Niltava, Verditer Flycatcher, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Black-throated Tit, Green-backed Tit, Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird.

 

Other Wildlife

The endemic Grey-nosed Snub Monkey (Guizhou Golden Monkey) occurs in the mountains here. Fanjing Shan is also a stronghold for Pallas’s Pit Viper and the Giant Salamander. Other animals include Clouded Leopard and Assam Macaque.

Habitat and Vegetation

The Dove Tree and Chinese Tulip Tree both grow on the slopes of Fanjing Shan. The slopes up to 2150m are covered in subtropical forest. Above this level grassland predominates.

 

Getting there

Take a train to Yu Ping 玉屏from Guiyang 贵阳 (6-8 hours) or from Huaihua 怀化 (3 hours) in Hunan. From there change to a bus to Tong Ren 铜仁 (83km); change to another bus for the 60km to Jiangkou 江口and finally another change again to travel the last 28km to the reserve. There is more than one hotel in the village of Bagan 灞干on the Hei Wan 黑湾river. From the village it is 9km to the foot of the mountain where the 7000 steps begin to ascend the long climb from 960m to the summit.
